| I know the model number of my equipment, but was unpleasantly surprised to find I had to know the serial number too in case of changed parts. We all have to learn, I guess.
I really appreciate the parts guys that could find you your part when you drop a greasy, mangled item on the desk. They'd take some measurements and ask some questions and you'd get it in 10 minutes. Those guys are getting old now.
Some advice - when someone comes in asking for something, DO NOT say it doesn't exist! My father went in for an irrigation fitting; the old guy says that doesn't exist (the old, broken one is in the truck). So my dad leaves and goes to the competition. The parts girl (~19 yo) looks through the book and says 'OK, I can order that.'
Similarly, I was trying to support local business, but every shop I asked if they could get it for me said they'd never heard of it or it didn't exist. I ordered it on the internet.
