SW Iowa | So just looking for some open discussion, input, and how and if you shred your pastures. I'll start by saying this is definitely location dependent, so looking mainly at operations in the Midwest or where there is similar rainfall. It seems like this conversation goes right in line with the no-till vs tillage debate. This small practice works for some and not for others, and I just want to hear why. Pros I have heard are that it can help reseed when cut at maturity, allows access to new growth when grasses have matured, possibly pink eye prevention, and then, of course, just the aesthetics. I also understand labor, fuel, wear, and tear on equipment. Let's also presume a high cutting height, not mowing the lawn.
Edit: I also ask because when we have paddocks not yet stocked but the grass is 3 feet tall, I find it hard not to just bale it, but at least when getting cows turned out on it, with it being shredded, there is younger and even growth.
