I'll kick in another response to those grumbling about counter people not knowing what you have or unable to quickly find what you need. The number of different models and updates has increased exponentially since my time. Back then we had computers for inventory and billing, but looked up parts on microfiche. 'On-line' was how you dried your clothes...

One of the last things I did before I left was order parts stock for the new 8000 series tractors. I went a lot heavier on switches and sensors than the recommended list and I often wonder if that was the right thing to do or not. Maybe a lot of those parts sat on the shelves unsold or, worse yet, quickly subbed to newer numbers and got 'lost' in the system.

We needed another counter person, and it was easier finding somebody who could operate the computer than finding someone who knew machinery. Didn't work out real well...
