I'm pretty sure all of the 848's came with air bags, none of the other 4' wide 84x series did. You either did not have a 848 or it was modified. The 848 is by far the best of the series and the last of the chain balers before NH went to belts.
My neighbor has a 5' wide 851, the difference in bale quality is extreme.
