south dakota | tuned and no gopher mounds i ran my 499 around 7-8 mph in alfalfa grass i did was just small patches some grass cut better then others. Having your reel speed set to cutting speed will help lots as well and Yes on those machines need good guards and sickles and make sure you keep your guards all straight as long as buy quality ones (not box store but shoup were good) then you can straightten them a couple of times before they break if needed. Also have to make sure you sickle is in time to each side as well. I have a 1475 for most things now and would really hate to go back to cutting every thing with a 499 now. Im sure if i got a disk mower/conditioner id probably hate to go back to using the 1475.
