At this point Khamenei has two choices. Do nothing and expose himelf to the wrath of the 20 percent in Iran who back him and will consequentially overthrow him for doing nothing , or retaliate and feel the heat from DJT. At that point he won't last long.
He's made some very bad choices in the last 36 years. It all comes down to this.
