We have Kidde as well. Construction ended in December (so only 6 months old). I didn't take covers off until final cleaning was done to make sure no dust got into them. I've replaced 2 so far that would go into either fault mode or alarm mode. Major pain in the butt. I'm going to get a can of compressed air to keep in the house to see if that solves the problem as I suspect maybe dust is triggering them even though we don't have a dusty house and they never go off while cooking.
