I have a mechanic friend who keeps track of how many computers are on the newer vehicles, and he recently had a luxury car come in that set a new record:
23 computers.
Ironically, the issue the car was having was that the windows wouldn't roll down. Turns out the fault was in the computer in the rear hatch area bringing up an error of some sort, so the computer that controls the windows shut off the controls.
Yup, on some new cars, when you push the button to unroll the window, it is no longer a switch connected to the window motor, it connects to a computer, which then controls the windows. Said some cars have computer chips in the taillights (so that they can have those fancy light displays when you hit the brake or turn signal) that cost over $1000 to replace.
Manufacturers have lost the plot! Guess it's profitable for them tho!
