Regarding long term S&P prospects, history shows it just goes up, and up, and up over time. Of course some pullbacks/corrections from time to time. If you have a long time horizon --> don't hold cash!! "Time in the market beats timing the market" is the old saying...
The USA has had an unbelievable run, from 1789 to present, as shown in this chart:
