You pretty much wrote what I was going to, your points are spot on. I got lucky and married the farmers daughter that grew up showing cattle, so we are of like mind. Your points about the 14 year old mirror mine....let's see, he'll be wanting a car/pickup pretty soon. Time for him to crank it up about 3 notches. Baby girl wants a horse, well Dad would be a sucker for that, but at the expense of cattle or household chores. Horses are not cheap and are expensive to keep around. But if she responsible, it could be a good learning experience. Sell all but 20 cows, enough for one bull, move calving out of cold weather


+1 and I will add some additional thoughts:

Find a time of year that is easier not sure in your area but I would think April or maybe September, drop the silage make round bales and skip the grain, good cows do not need it and it will shorten up chores immensely, cut the herd to what you can run as outlined. 20 to 40 cows can be much less then 1/2 the work of 80.
