I understand what he’s saying, but I don’t think he’s right with the points he makes. Big ag doesn’t “ruin” the world economy. It hurts small towns for sure, but small towns are a very very very small portion of the global economy. Chevy and Ford aren’t looking to have one dealer in every town with 3000 people, it’s far easier to have 10 small towns move to an urban area and put in 3 dealerships to cover them that staff as many people, in some cases more, than the small town dealers. So while I agree I hate seeing ag just get turned into large conglomerates, his argument just doesn’t hold water at this point. Large farms are seemingly better for the economy as a whole, which is why we’re trending that direction and why the farm bills have been the way they are. Just like most industry. And let’s face it, most of us if we’re honest could go to a city and work a job that pays a steady wage that’s a lot higher per hour and have tons of free time to do what we want. That’s not what I want to be doing so I’m not but I could be and could have a great life that way. It’s all about the perspective. Do I personally farming 500 acres add any more value to the world than my friend who went to work in finance in corporate America? No, because if I didn’t farm these 500 acres someone else would. And he gets paid a lot better than I do. We need to drop the entitled attitude in agriculture and get back to understanding why we do what we do. It’s all about efficiently feeding and fueling and clothing the world so everyone else can do other value added jobs that make life entertaining and comfortable and exciting. We could go back to everyone being a hunter/gatherer but that would really take the joy out of life. Now I can go to concerts and go get on a plane and fly around the world for vacation and see awesome architecture and enjoy nature in other ways than just foraging for food.
