Depending on when they came they absolutely did not need a sponsor. Most immigration didn't require one. Almost all immigrants before 1924 just showed up and were made citizens.
Most of these sponsorship malarkey you were talking about came well after most immigration was shut down in 1924 sponsorship was a 1930s program designed to limit huge amounts of Jewish people coming down into the states because of anti-semitism.
