Big Sky Country | I got no idea how wide and long that alley is—-presume it’s single file? Too long can be a pain, a ‘can’t back’ can help—-I do overhead, can just let chains down lower for calves—-
Im thinking they perceive they got no way to go—-at least for the cows, if you leave the ‘stock trailer load out wide open and cycle them thru a couple times, might surprise you —-second time will take half the time—-and they quickly learn can’t back isn’t an obstacle.
If it’s just for load out—-why have it narrow anyhow? 12’ for afoot, 14’ for some times on foot sometimes horse, 16’ always on horse works pretty good. 10’ is too narrow! Can get hurt, not enuf room to dodge, sometimes.
A couple gates to block alley as you bring them up. And you can put some cattle in alley and do a 3 way sort as they come back.
This wouldn’t take much change—-move outside of alley to be wider, hang a couple gates, if you need singlefile for chute, angle one off to the left.
I got setup like this—-cattle can go 5 ways—straight ahead into alley that continues , hook a right into trailer load out—about 12x20 —-or before wide trailer load out, hook a right into single file open end—-either portable loading chute goes here or vets hydraulic.
Or—hook a left into single file that goes to my working chute. Now—these options exit from Bud box.
Or—-let them come back I can sort into 2 pens on the right, one on the left (pen my working chute exits into) or they can continue exiting alley the way they come in—-
Oh ya—-and before bud box I got a 12 x12 maternity —very stout—-can use it for a little pen plus it exits into calf table.
It’s all really pretty simple—-and gives options.
A guy really wants to put thought into how he hangs gates——my ‘pen gates ‘ will block alley but also open 180 degrees, I can shoot right across from first pen on right to pen on left—-
