S MN
I planted about 20 emerald green arbovitae around 15 years ago to hide the septic mound a bit- along outside edges. I kept them watered for a couple years and they really grew well- very nice screen hedge about 10' tall, 3.5' apart. Basically no maintenance after that and I thought I really like these Emerald Green Arbovitae... (normal wet fall and abundant snowfall during that time. Pretty open location like you described) A few years ago we had a dry fall and a very low snowfall winter, warmed up very early then turned bitter cold again. About March all of them turned probably 90 percent brown- along with many in the area. I wound up replacing them with a deciduous shrub the following spring after finally punting. Your's are probably young enough that they may shed the dead and fill in the voids in my opinion. Pretty sure you can trim out the brown to give it a head start. All I know is some arbovitae varieties really don't like real dry soil and descicating winter winds with no snow cover.
