Subject: RE: Nursing home cost

This isn't very pleasnant if you are resigned to the thought that a nursing home is inevitable: 1,. The average nursing home stay is under 14 months 2. The median stay is 5 months. Looking at the median Might be more realistic since just a very few people have very long stays that make the average stay so much longer than the median. My parents died at around 80 with no nursing home stay. My wifes parents died at a slightly younger age with stays totaling less than 4 months. 3. Aproximately 22 to27% of the deaths in the United States are in Nursing homes. I suppose if you are a prospective heir and the old folks don't want to give away their assets this info is heartening.
Take this for what it is worth but according to The Nursing Home Abuse Center: One of the most common causes of Nursing home death is neglect.
My wife and I after just watching her parents die have both agreed that we are going to be even more determined to stay fit as long as possible and travel as much as possible. We think this will help keep us in the majority that does die in a nursing home.
