If labor is scarce the cost will go up. If labor costs rise, the use of mechanization and automation will increase. Once mechanization takes place, there is no going back to hand labor. Robotic weeders are here, they just have to cover a lot of acres to justify the investment. Greenhouse automation is amazing, but doesn't make sense until you get several acres under glass. We are rapidly moving to replacing labor with machines and the technicians needed to maintain them. So far we don't have a robot to check on the calving barn at 3:30 am.
