Pittsburg, Kansas | We used to raise Natto soybeans for the Japanese market. We worked through a co-op but one time the buyers actually visited our farm. Unfortunately I could not be there so did not meet them but my foreman did and showed them around and let them climb up in the grain bin and check out the beans.
The beans were a specific variety of non-GMO soybeans that were modestly smaller than conventional soybeans and yielded about 2/3 what our best commercial varieties would.
We grew them for a few years but eventually quit as the premium price we got would not quite offset the lower yield and modest hassle of keeping them identity preserved. They could also be prone to popping out if harvest was delayed. But it was an interesting few years.
I never have even tasted Natto.
