| As far as the college for something to fall back on, are there jobs in your immediate area where that degree is needed? If no jobs than a degree is not as useful, add onto that when a person has been away from something for several years the knowledge will disappear. Now maybe something like plumbing, electrical, or mechanic, would be a food skill to learn because of the benefit on the farm and he would be able to make money at it locally.
Edit: I forgot to say also, if there is limited money in farming I don't see how adding $50,000 in college debt is going to help.
