Subject: RE: Cleaning sprayer Halex and Atrazine

Paxton, IL
I think I probably do more than most, but I usually only clean out the sprayer once or twice during the year when switching between crops.

My typical procedure is as follows:
Add 100 gal of clean water to tank, agitate and run tank rinse nozzles if equipped, spray out rinsate until empty.
Add another 100 gal of clean water, add household ammonia, repeat agitate and tank rinse then spray out.
Add another 100 gal of clean water and repeat process for a final rinse. I have a wet boom and have installed mini ball valves at the end of each section that I'll open up one by one while the tank is rinsing. This flushes out the small glob of atrazine that is typically left at the end of each boom section.

If I'm in a hurry I've cut this down to a single rinse with ammonia then a few gallon of the fresh water from the rinse tank to do a quick final rinse. I've skipped flushing out the ends of the boom before I installed the ball valves and never saw any sign of crop damage from anything left in the boom ends, but flushing them out seems like a good idea if possible.
