Subject: Wiring in attic routing

East Central Arkansas
This is in old construction and updating the wiring. Currently wires run across the top of ceiling joist and some even run down the top of a joist. Wanting my new wire to have less chance of damage when installing the new insulation.
I have done several searches but don't seem to to come up with anything real clear.
I have some runs that running under the bottom of the roof rafters would get the wires out of the way. It would take a little more wire is the biggest problem I see but will only be 12 romex.
On the wires across the ceiling joist when they need to turn and run with the joist can they be stapled to the sides instead of laying on the top?
Things sure was simple 45 years ago when I didn't know any better and was just a poor country boy making things work just to survive. I guess I am still a poor country just trying to survive.
