Subject: How I got to this point

I see no reason any normal user of a Windows PC should need to purchase 3rd party Antivirus software.  Microsoft started taking security seriously about 20 years ago.  I shrugged it off for about 5 years and then realized I was wasting money and resources by not using the free and built in offering.

I agree but with my last new computer from WalMart, (the one I'm using right now), it included the bloatware I guess it is called inciting me to purchase McAfee, Norton etc.

I was not able to get it to work on the Internet until I purchased and installed McAfee. I didn't think that should be the case but it seemed to be. In other words I felt I was being held hostage. My friends indicated "that's the way it is nowadays".

I purchased some McAfee product and later complained to them but instead of getting a refund, I got a second free year.

I would like to rid myself of McAfee although I have had to call on them a time or two to "get me going" again.

Is it possible that McAfee themselves purposely did something to my new computer to force me to purchase their service. Is it possible that from time to time they purposely cause problems (which they can fix after a call) to reinforce the idea that their product is worthwhile and necessary.

I get very nasty messages on Facebook from time to time that are supposedly being "caught" by Microsoft. These are common tasks and nothing which might seem suspicious. These message lock up my computer and warn me not to shut down but to call some number. I do shut down and reboot with success.

How can I start over with a "clean slate" without relying on McAfee, Norton and the others? I believe that from a practical sense I'm stuck with Windows and my ISP.

Thanks for any advice.

I can tolerate the slow response on AgTalk if this is what it takes to insure a fairly reliable system.
