$1000 feeders will break more guys then you think… we are approaching the $1500 a head breakeven.$1000 feeders don’t pay for $200,000 loader tractors… discbines are north of $50,000… balers are $60-$70,000. I still have more years in front of me than behind me. I see no reason to expand and make no money. If I can bide my 10–15 years there is a lot of guys in my area that will hang it up.
Far as heifer retention, I would rather keep my own genetics… that heifer will pay for itself. Our angus genetics are older and even what’s bred now relates to it. We are making cows that have longevity… you can’t afford to replace what you raise. Different if you’re just running a commercial herd. I want a cow that goes 15 years… I’m disappointed if they can’t make 12 years. It’s still possible boys
