michigan | Local daily approached me about renting some of my ground to plant Sudan grass after I harvest my wheat. Usually I trade wheat straw for drag line manure with him. He wants to bale the straw then plant the grass. May or may not apply manure before planting it. He says it will grow about 2 foot tall in about 40 days. Then he will mow and chop the grass probably in September before chopping corn and apply manure in fall.
I am a corn, soy, wheat farmer in Michigan.
My questions:
1. How much nutrients is Sudan grass going to pull out of my soil?
2. What would a fair rent be to let him do this?
My concerns are how much it will pull out of my soil and possible compaction from trucks during harvest.
Would like to get some livestock guys opinions on this because this cash cropper has no clue if it’s a good idea.
Thank!
