Eastern Shore of MD | Clover was ok but could have established a little better with more moisture last fall.
AGB - yes we can make $. We grow our barley cc seed, no fall tillage and only tillage in spring was strip till. Same burn down and fertility program as other corn acres and maybe get 30# extra N from clover. One slight caveat is that being in the Chesapeake Bay watershed we do get payment to plant cover crops. I would have liked to have pulled a biomass sample and determine nutrient values in cover crop but we did not get that done. Will pull psnt and sidedress rate will be determined by nitrate level in soil.
Wingman- We do get a lot of positive comments from neighbors when we do this… I think it is pretty too. Friend has honey bee hives and they love it.
Guts- No fert in strip. We were trying to get a better seed bed with the strip vs just planting into the jungle.
Fert plan is same as other fields. Applied 4 ton compost early spring then have 75# N -13#p and 15#S total with starter and broadcast. Will pull psnt shortly and base side dress rate on soil nitrate level.
