Subject: Carb cycling

Pittsburg, Kansas

I have heard some in the past in favor of carb cycling but generally the on line doctors I listen to don't generally see any benefits in the idea. One danger they point out, which I agree with, is it can cause addiction problems with people who have that problem. I consider myself in that group. Give me things that taste sweet too often or too much and I find myself craving sweets again. But I digress.

Nick Norwitz has an interesting point of view on the subject. In a way Carolynn and I do carb cycle, more by accident rather than by design. We don't at home at all or even when we eat out at home. But, for example, when we went on a two week Eruopean cruise we allowed ourselves some latitude of eating some foods and deserts that we normally would not at home. We didn't go crazy. But did allow ourselves to enjoy some of the treats made available to us and were already paid for in our tickets. The good news is my glucose levels did pretty well with the new intermittent carb load. One particular night it went well beyond where I want to see it and told myself I better cool it a little. But for the most part my blood glucose only raised a pretty nominal amount after meals. My evaluation is my insulin resistance is way better than it was seven years ago but is still not completely reversed or cured. My A1 is still in pre-diabetic range and I have to treat my diet as such. Again I digress.

We tend to eat very large amounts of protein, which he addresses in the presentation. So we do that too, more by accident and what we like to eat rather than by design.

We do have a ketone meter as well as glucose meters so we can check out our metabolism. But I rarely use it anymore. Dang test strips are a buck apiece and I am a cheapskate. But every once in a while I will get the bug to see where my ketones are at and I will test multiple times a day for a few days. Then put it back in the drawer. Once again I digress.

Here is Nick with some thoughtful considerations. Before I think of something else I have to say.
