I'm with Chuck on his route through WI.
Western WI is very scenic, but if you need to make miles in a shorter time, 151 at Dubuque to Fond du Lac and then Hwy 41 all the way to the UP of Michigan border.
Avoid rush hour travel times in Madison and Appleton WI.
I live in East Central WI and have a brother in Detroit.
I can go either way to visit him, through the UP or down and around the South side of Lake Michigan. The UP route is longer, but easier driving.
That being said, I wouldn't be afraid of coming home I 94, then cross IL south of Chicago.
Ford Village and Museum in Detroit is very interesting, but it will take an entire day by itself. If you don't have the time, but are interested in Henry Ford stuff, go to the Piquette Avenue Ford museum instead.
