Iowa | 40' planter/ 80' sprayer here. You are correct if a guy gets a little sloppy planting the second pass on the ends you will mow down one row spraying which I've done for short distances.
If no section control it makes it easy to know where to turn booms on and off at the ends. If you're still manually steering and you're conventional tillage usually the tracks from the planter are still visible making it easy to know which row to turn back into doing early post. I realize those are unique situations and technology has eliminated those problems but thats what I've experienced.
Keep in mind also we have 0 contours (all straight track) and only 1 field border that isn't parallel or perpendicular to the rows so what works for me won't be worth a darn for others.
