Alpena MI
Actually, an 80k 5 axle tractor trailer is allowed more lbs per axle than a 154k 11 (tandem tractor and 8 axle single trailer) axle rig. I know which rig I would rather drive. More braking power by a long shot in the 154k rig, while carrying 54 tons in the wagon.

When you start talking 5 and 3 trains, the weight per axle discussion changes, because there are 3 axles that are allowed 18k per axle under the pup. The braking power equation changes with that as well, although the newer trailers with disk brakes nullifies the braking power issue substantially.

Pros and cons no matter which way you look at it.

I was hauling corn silage with an 8 axle when I was 16, and started pulling trains when I was 18. I started pulling milk to OH and PA on the wknds when I was 21 for Meredith & Albrecht, so I learned the ins and outs of 80k tankers there, plus hauling equipment around the midwest as needed. Occasionally I would pull loads of milk in state for Pete Northup with 8 axle tanks so I picked up some experience here and there over the years. (Albeit not that many years compared to most on this board, I understand.)
