I found this video to be pretty interesting. The consensus seems to be that carrying more per truck, providing that the trucks can do so safely, is more efficient and better for the environment. It also seems that no one is taking about increasing the federal weight cap from 80,000lbs. Why not?

We get Canadian trucks in several times per year and they usually bring in 40-42t net loads. They run 4 axles on most trailers but we occasionally see a 5 axle. These trucks were the first place I saw air disc brakes. I’d much prefer to handle fewer trucks that carry more each.

Oh, and there’s a general shortage of drivers leading to some pretty unqualified operators on the roads. Wouldn’t it make more sense to let good operators haul more and not need so many of the sub par ones?

Thoughts?

You have asked your questions obviously favoring larger heavier trucks. I will say that our roads are in poor condition, at least in part due to our larger heavier trucks. Our climate is also rough on the roads.

Where the sweet spot is, who knows. We should not have torn out so many rail lines and should have allowed/mandated open running rights to get a lot of heavy freight off of the highways.

A lot of grain leaves the yard in trucks like this. Some of it travels hundreds of miles. A unit train is far more efficient at that distance.
