I havent used a 5, I just know it also has the larger screen and a bigger keypad. I also use their TSI scale computer, I think all of their stuff handles 100k entries (nothing I'll ever aproach) And it all uses the APS computer software, I get along fine with that. My biggest use is only scanning animals in the chute and registering weights, I just happened upon a deal for the TSI, otherwise it's totally overkill. Distance is really only within arms reach for reading the tags, then it uses bluetooth to record to the TSI/scale head in the general area (Or internal memory to bring it back home to your computer)

Here's what AI thinks is the difference:

The main difference between the Gallagher HR4 and HR5 EID readers is the HR5's ability to record and edit data, including custom traits, on the device itself, while the HR4 primarily focuses on data collection. The HR5 has an alpha-numeric keypad for immediate data entry and editing, whereas the HR4 requires data entry on a computer or weigh scale. Both readers can record and display detailed information on animals, including EID numbers and visual IDs, but the HR5 offers more comprehensive data management and editing capabilities.

So if you need to enter and edit more data right then and there, vs just recording animals, the HR5 serves that purpose. The HR4 is just a better screen version of my hr3, that captures data for use back at the computer, with a little more options on what you can capture.
