Wood conveyors work well. My dad built several out of pressure-treated lumber, and they lasted twenty years with less structural failure than the 15-year-old galvanized steel ones that preceded them. He designed the floors so they could be easily relined with fresh 2x6 lumber as they wore down. Those were using the typical 12-inch single-chain setup, and I expect the head and tail units were common Jamesway parts.
If I was installing a conveyor again, I'd seriously consider just building the frame from scratch out of treated lumber like he did.
