Sanilac Co. Michigan
Great posts!
When I went back to farming full time, nearly 30 years ago, I had a 64' 3020 gas tractor, 10'Great Plains drill I rented and a CII Gleaner with hart/Carter "floating" head. Some whomped out wagons and a TO35 Ferguson pretty well rounded out things. Elevator did my spraying. Pretty low value line of intermediate assets and no debt, but managed to turn a profit. Slowly (very slowly) improved on those original tools. Started to pick from the back of the dealers used lot instead of folks fence rows. About the only brand new stuff I've ever bought was a new Great Plains 10' notil drill and a 3pt post hole auger, everything else has been a variation on the above mentioned theme.

I could go on and on, but the lesson is clear: don't get hung up on flashy equipment, creature comfort, or specific brand loyalty to the detriment of your working capital and you'll likely do OK.
