You can try and disable the nmea VTG message and see what happens.
It is the message that transmits speed, but I believe the value goes negative when you reverse. I saw this issue on a fertiliser spreader years back.
I am not familiar with the raven, but I had some systems that worked fine with just the gga. If the raven cruizer relies on the speed from the vtg, it obviously wont work.
