Vauxhall Alberta Canada
We ran a jd 3970 for a few years and it was terrible. Really crappy cut length consistency and way too many breakdowns. Ours had the 3 row corn head that was quite useless in green corn or damp conditions as the rubber belted gathering chains would not hold the stalks tight enough and it would plug. Worked much better after a frost when the plant dried down a bit. Also the blower is not very good for gummy crops like alfalfa, corn was OK at best. Went to a 7170 Hesston and it was fantastic in comparison and you could make a 250 hp tractor work with it. You can also get the same machine as a case but I don't know the model number. I would think parts would still be available for them as they were pretty common at one time before the big self propelled machines took over. The hesston/case models can be bought cheap too.
