South Central MN | Wasn't all that long ago common USDA practice wouldn't have even considered putting the words "no-till" and "cover crop" in the same sentence.
That and what works for one area doesn't always work in another so practices need to be tailored to specific fields.
I know I don't like seeing my dirt move anywhere but some either don't care or don't know how to keep it from moving. Seen dirt move here this winter on fields in the area, and knowing what was done on them last fall or why a small part of a field was blowing when the rest wasn't was a good teaching moment. Some spots had a drown out spot and bare soil, even no-tilled would have blown in that case with the freeze dried dirt on top. Didn't help some here ran across soybean stubble with a high speed disk then had NH3 applied with a chisel plow, that looked like a mess in the road ditch. | |
