South Central MN | I'm thinking location has a lot to do with it also, up here most years when the corn goes in the rye would be small. Mine was maybe pushing all of 4" and barely starting to develop future stems/tillers. Sure has a lot of root growth for that size though.
I think keeping the seeding rates down would help with some of the problems going into corn especially. Did see someone tried winter camelina in a mix with rye last year but not sure how it would work seeding wise if it needs to be out a lot earlier than rye? Supposed to be a better option ahead of corn since it breaks down a little quicker than the rye and might not be a host for some fungal disease that hits corn. | |
