SW WI | Tough to answer. Our cat plays with mice and rodents. Kills them I believe usually, but I do not see the cat eat them. The cat rather likes his dry and wet food. 4 years ago had pigs back barn and chickens front. Rats had nest, burrough by pigs ( old barn enough space in concrete) The day the pigs left I cleaned any all food sources, put poison down into the burrough. Never saw a rat again. From my reading more chance the rat will die in burrough. Risky I was afraid chickens eat a dead rat. rats and mice are about immune to warfarin these days from what I read.
Guess you need to do some work on your coop, hardware cloth and guessing norway rats find the burroughs maybe help?
If rats are getting in means weasel could also. Weasel will go into rat burroughs, if you have any weasels around.
