Do the monuments, the Smithsonian, and Arlington Cemetery (Tomb of the Unknown Soldier). Definitely go to the Capitol and try to get a tour of it from your local representative's staff. If you are so inclined, the Bible Museum is fantastic and can take a good part of a day.
DC is a fun place to visit. I was there this week.
