While you have it off, grab that splined shaft and shake it good. Pull and push it in and out. Had one the bearing went out on and it would run fine until it primed up. Then impeller/shaft would move toward the inlet and rub the housing. Couldn’t hear it and didn’t see it for a long time trying to figure out what was wrong with the engine that would idle perfectly but suddenly start laboring and blowing black smoke when it had to pump water. | |
