I carry the "Original Leatherman".   Its a pretty small & basic tool, needle nose pliers, 2 knives, 2 flat screw drivers and phillips screw driver, metal file (which is actually very usable) and a 8"/20cm ruler.     I probably use the big knife and needle nose pliers the most but I regularly use the entire tool.

IMO, its the best multi tool that's ever been made but sadly its been discontinued.   Luckily I have what should be a lifetime supply of new ones waiting on standby.

I think the PSTII (the 2ND edition of the original Leatherman tool is actually better. Same pliers, same size tool, but with an updated file (one side is a diamond file) and they replaced (I think) the awl with smallish but usable scissors.

For the best pliers ever put into a multi-tool, look to the USA made (in DeWitt Nebraska) Vise-Grip/Schrade multi tool. Could be had with standard, needle nose, or large jaw vise-grip pliers, a 1/4" hex drive screwdriver holder that locked in 2 positions (straight for ease of use, 90* for maximum leverage) and came with a double sided (flat and Phillips) bit, a knife blade, a file/scraper, and a couple other small tools that seemed to vary from tool to tool.

For carrying on my belt, I liked the original Super Tool. No other tool carried as many robust tools in as compact a package as that one did. Think the original Leatherman tool, but with bigger, heavier pliers (enough to cut both strands of barbed wire at once if you had good hand strength) and slightly thicker more robust locking screwdriver bits and blades. I broke the knife on mine prying, and sent it back to Leatherman who replaced it for free with their new version, the Super Tool 300. While I like the upgraded pliers (has replaceable hard wire cutting edges, and an easier to manipulate lock for the tools) it seems to be 'bulkier' in use without seeming any stronger. Part of this is the handles are thicker, with a rolled edge I assume for comfort, but it also makes the whole tool thicker without adding any extra features or strength I can notice.

The tool that carries the most useable tools in the smallest package would have to be my WAVE+. The tools are just big enough to be fully useable, yet still is very compact. The pliers have replaceable wire cutters, and it has both regular sized and eyeglass sized flat/phillips screwdriver insert bits that you can easily replace if damaged.

I also have a bunch of import clones that I carry places where losing a genuine Leatherman is a possibility. Some of the clones are surprisingly good quality for the price. BiBury is a very well made brand, probably 80-90% of Leatherman quality at 30-50% of the price. They make lots of versions, find one that has the features you want. They also have sheaths with a very good pocket clip that lets you clip/remove the sheath from your belt without taking off your belt, yet is secure and won't fall off.
Roktol is another good maker of clones. The tools are probably equal to BiBury, but the sheaths aren't as nice.

Gerbers are pretty good, the USA made ones are really good, but lately most are imported.

SOG makes some decent ones, some models have about the nicest, smoothest pliers I have ever experienced on a multi-tool.

Overall the Swiss Army one is really good, as well. Probably as good as the Leatherman brand.

I really don't want to admit how many multi-tools I own. Like I tell my wife, I don't drink, gamble or run around on her, so at least give me that, LOL.
