Unless you have an automatic transmission, or there’s some reason the engine cannot rotate, I would air up the brakes, release them and then pull it flat in a gear that rotates the engine at a reasonable rpm so you have power steering and are building air for brakes.

I do that for any old tractors that don’t have hydraulic clutch or powershift. If the engine is spinning, I’ve got steering and brakes. Just have to remember not to push in the clutch! Had a kid do that as we came up to a turn-off one day. He had a little steering on the old 3020 Deere, but no brakes! Good I wasn’t pulling him along that fast, so we made the Y all right as he came up alongside the pickup, but had to stop and explain again the importance of not using the clutch.

The ones that there is a reason the engine or trans can’t rotate are more difficult.

Dad has always told us about the dangers of pulling dead tractors with pickups down the road because eventually someone meets the Lord after the crash.

I thought NOT putting the tractor in tow/ disengaging the transmission or rear end on 4020/etc was the culprit of smoked top shaft transmission bearings or rear-end axle bearings because of no lube? You’re saying the hydraulic pumps turn enough in-gear while being towed to pump oil and keep them lubed?

I honestly had no idea.
