SW OH | The DOT here doesn't care how you shift, as long as you can do it successfully. I taught a trainee how to shift without using the clutch in about 1 month. I then went with him to take his CDL test. He passed with compliments. I know of other new hires that failed because of grinding gears to the point of having to stop and take off from a dead stop trying to double clutch.
We have 3 drag drivers that know how to drive without using the clutch. Their trucks have from 200,000 to 800,000 miles on the original clutch. We have some newbie drivers in older water trucks that can't get 10,000 miles out of a clutch. All the trucks purchased new for the 10 years have come with Allison automatics. It's rare to find anyone less than 45 years old that can drive an old school truck.
