If you are banding at birth now, why are you thinking of cutting instead?
I band bull calves at birth (along with tagging and spraying iodine on their navel). As you said, 5 min job. Works good. Dad and Grandpa used to cut at birth, but banding seems easier and safer - I see no reason to cut.
