As long as it wouldn't put your family in a jam if you kick the bucket, I don't see how you lose here. Provided you trust this guy/family is reputable, I'd still get the whole thing drawn up by a lawyer. And if it's worth anything to you, you get to actually do something to help a young guy get going instead of just talking about it like most people.
