Milford, IL | Agree, transmissions with lots of gears work great to keep a combustion engine near peak torque. And also agree lockup converters help, those have been around since the late 70s.
1990s GM B body was one example of a vehicle that would get better mpg at (slightly) higher speed. Small displacement V8 that made peak torque at about 1800rpm, four speed auto with overdrive ratio of .7 to 1 and 2.73 gears in the differential = 1400 RPM @ 60MPH and 1650 RPM @ 70MPH. They really would get 30+ mpg at 70 MPH on flat land. Lower 60s mpg was a little less and the transmission hunted at the slightest grade.
Like I said, unusual, but possible. And certainly less likely with modern vehicles. | |
