Subject: Sprayed small grains??????

nw NC
Today I drove to my dairy equipment supplier about 40 miles straight line distance southwest of here. I saw corn from 3/4 knee-high down to just emerged. Some soybeans were about three inches. Many acres nothing planted yet nor grassland hay made. Small grains were headed out and looked good. In areas near where large dairies operate, small grains had been chopped as silage.

I noticed in some fields of wheat there were sprayer tracks that had just very recently been made, probably just before the heavy rains that started Sunday. I wondered about that as it surely would not be fertilizer application at this late stage of growth. I passed fields of barley that had very long awns (beards). Those large fields had sprayer tracks through them also. The barley was brown and I do not believe it was from natural maturing because I could see some narrow strips at the edges of the field that the barley was not brown but green to the ground. It then struck me that no doubt those fields of small grains (the barley) had been sprayed , most likely with glyphosate as grasses and weeds along the borders were also dying or dead. I stopped and took a head of the barley and examined it for grain fill. The kernels were quite small with a only a little juice or doughy material that I could squeeze from them. Why would anyone be spraying small grains to kill it at the stage of growth it is in? If they did it to hurry along maturity and drying, I believe they will be sorely disappointed in the yield due to there being only very small shriveled kernels of grain left after the moisture in the kernels is dried.

Please state your opinions. Thanks.
