Franklinton, LA
You can transfer heat by radiation, conduction and convection. The blinds will reduce the transfer of heat due to radiation. By restricting air flow over the windows, they will slightly reduce heat transfer by conduction and convection.

Insulated drapes will also reduce radiant heat transfer. They will be better than blinds in reducing conduction and convection heat transfer. This feature will be helpful on hot summer days and long cold winter nights. I like the idea of opening the blinds or whatever to enjoy the view.

Shade trees or something over the outdoor compressor will slightly cool the surrounding air and improve the efficiency. However, whatever you add should not restrict air movement over the compressor. Do you have any shrubs restricting air movement over the compressor? Also, how far is the compressor from the house? Putting the compressor on the shaded north side of the house will also help.

Have you checked the ducts for damaged insulation, air leaks or air flow restrictions?
