Eastern NE KS
Thanks for the replies. I tag and vaccinate all newborns and band close to 75% of my bull calves at birth so watching for an upset cow is in my routine. Processing newborns is a 5-7 minute task. Tagging and navel iodine got me started but I'm doing more and more branding activities at birth. One activity added was banding at birth.

Long ago Dad and I knife cut bulls at branding time with just the two of us and scalpel in Dad's mouth. We really needed another hand helping us. A calf struggled and kicked the scalpel away, luckily without hurting either of us. Mitchco's sharp scissors is a interesting and I think safer cutting tool. Handling newborns is much easier than a 60 day old calf if mama not a issue. Cutting the bottom of the sac off is the same technique as Dad used. I bet it is near bloodless too.
