ECIL
Much like 12Man. Calf usually on left side, cutter sits on calf facing backward and tucks the top hind leg under their leg. We cut the tip of the scrotum off and pulled out one testicle and split the covering and then pulled the inner actual nut out and cut the cord as high as we could. Then the other testicle. Probably too many cuts, most just pull the whole thing as others said. When we had cow/calf probably averaged 30-40 cuts a year for 20+ years. Only had one calf get tetanus and not sure that was from the cut. (Purchased bull feeders we did in the chute standing up, didn't cut the whole tip off, just split each side and took the nut out.) Mamma cow involvement could be an issue. Helped to have a second person with a buggy whip but frequently we threw the calf in the back of a pickup or jeep. One time I had the calf in the bed of an S10 Chevy and a dog in the bed also. As the cow went round and round the truck, the dog would lean over the side she was on and bark. The cow finally smacked the side of the truck going after the dog. Pretty good dent but luckily not the Sunday go to meeting vehicle. Just used one particular blade on a pocket knife, sharpened regularly, occasionally washed with water.
