Been doing it for the most of the last 20 years, use a disposable scalpel https://www.leedstone.com/p/pocket-scalpel-2/ I like the ones about 3-4 inches long, use same one for a season or 2. Idrag the calf under an electric fence most of the time, point the butt at the cow sit on the calf with top back leg forward under my butt exposing the jewel sack, squirt a mix of 1/4 tamed Iodine (Monodine or Iosan) and 3/4 tap water over the sack and cut the bottom inch off, grab the nut with the thumb on top and pinch the cord with your thumb nail against the side of finger and pull it out, do the same with the 2nd one. 1 more squirt of the tamed iodine water mix in the sack, wipe the scalpel off on the hair where the the idone mix is, put it back in the cover that comes with it and let the calf go. If the colder time of year will wait till the calf is going good , but can still easily catch them around 12 hours old, this time of year I do it quicker, usually like to have them up and have sucked at least once first, but have done it before they were completely licked off also. Gotten to the point most of my cows are really good, I have done it right next to the cow with no fence, but usually I am close to a fence to put between us, have had cows though that were ore protective, one I bought I dragged the calf under the a tractor and did him.

It is really surprising how fast they heal, week or two and barely any scab left.
